December 3, 1863

James Southall was exchanged, along with other Confederates, for Union prisoners after being held for six months at Fort McHenry in Maryland. Southall had entered the Confederate army of Northern Virginia as a surgeon. Later, he was a founding member of the Medical Department of Arkansas Industrial University, precursor to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS).
