April 9, 1865

James Henry Southall, a founding member of the Medical Department of Arkansas Industrial University, the precursor to the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS), was among those surrendered by General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. Southall had entered the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia as a surgeon.
