J. N. Heiskell died of congestive heart failure. Heiskell served as editor of the Arkansas Gazette for more than seventy years. During his tenure, he headed the newspaper during two world wars, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, the war in Vietnam, and thousands of other events. He was an effective civic affairs activist and used his influence to guide the state through decades of change.
