Aerospace industrialist James Smith McDonnell Jr., who grew up in Altheimer (Jefferson County), died at his suburban St. Louis, Missouri, home from complications of a stroke. McDonnell built McDonnell-Douglas into the second-largest military and commercial aviation corporation in the United States.
