Henry Rowe Schoolcraft was born in Guilderland, New York. Schoolcraft published the first written description of the Arkansas Ozarks’ geography, vegetation, wildlife, and inhabitants in his Journal of a Tour into the Interior of Missouri and Arkansaw, published in London, England. Schoolcraft was an explorer who traveled the White River in 1818 and early 1819; he also was one of the first anthropologists to take an interest in Native American history and culture.
