Civil rights activist Daisy Bates died of a heart attack at Baptist Medical Center. Bates gained national and international recognition for her courage and persistence as a mentor to the Little Rock Nine, the nine African-American students who integrated Central High School in Little Rock (Pulaski County) in 1957.
