James Mitchell married Elizabeth Latta at Latta’s family homestead in Vineyard (Washington County), and the couple had eight children over the next seventeen years. After the Civil War, Mitchell and Latta were reunited and moved to Little Rock (Pulaski County), where both proved to be influential in the community. Mitchell became president and editor-in-chief of the Arkansas Democrat, while Latta worked to benefit orphaned or neglected children as a dedicated member of the Children’s Aid Society.
