U.S. Senator Joseph Taylor Robinson died suddenly in Washington DC. Robinson, a Lonoke County native, had been governor of Arkansas only a short time before taking office as a U.S. senator. He became Senate majority leader during the Great Depression, after his nomination as the Democratic Party candidate for vice president—the first Southern officeholder on a major ticket after the Civil War. He is buried in Roselawn Cemetery in Little Rock (Pulaski County).
