Lewis Ernest Sawyer, a Democratic member of the U.S. House of Representatives who represented the Sixth District of Arkansas, died suddenly in Hot Springs (Garland County). Sawyer started his political career in Friars Point, Mississippi, where he became mayor in 1896. In 1898, Sawyer enlisted in the U.S. Army to serve in the Spanish-American War, spending time in the Philippines until 1900. He moved to Hot Springs with his family in 1908 and resumed his practice until he returned to the political arena, serving two sessions in the Arkansas House of Representative in 1913 and 1915. He returned to private practice afterward and was elected to the U.S. Congress in 1922.
