Public health expert Kathryn Hall-Trujillo was born in Moscow (Jefferson County). After experiencing an abusive marriage and homelessness in Oakland, California, she went on to receive a BA and MA in public health from the University of California at Los Angeles before working for the State of California and then founding her own nonprofit, Birthing Project USA, with the goal of reducing infant mortality.
