Mark Middleton (1962–2022)
Mark Middleton was a longtime Little Rock (Pulaski County) businessman who served for a time as a special adviser to President Bill Clinton and as assistant to Clinton’s chief of staff Thomas F. “Mack” McLarty. His death by suicide in 2022 led to a raft of rumors, reigniting some long dormant conspiracy theories tied to other allegedly mysterious deaths of Clinton aides.
Mark Edward Middleton was born in Little Rock on October 12, 1962, to Charles Middleton and Anita Middleton-Kellar. He had a brother and sister. He spent most of his youth in Bryant (Saline County) before attending the University of Arkansas (UA) in Fayetteville (Washington County), from which he received his law degree.
After finishing school, Middleton went to work in the family business, Middleton Heat and Air. The business, founded by Charles Middleton, originally operated out of the family garage and became Middleton Heat and Air in 1976. It relocated to Bryant in 1981 and grew to be licensed in a dozen states and have almost 300 employees, a far cry from the early days when Mark and his brother Larry were the first employees, working under the tutelage of their father.
In addition to his longtime involvement with Middleton Heat and Air, where he had served as managing director, Mark Middleton was president of the investment firm MidCorp Capital of Bryant, while he and his brother Larry owned a real estate company, MidCorp, which holds commercial properties across the state.
Beyond his many business interests, Middleton was also actively involved in the community, serving on the board of directors of CHI St. Vincent Foundation, CARTI, and Arvest, as well as the board of advisors for UAMS Foundation Fund, Fifty For The Future, American Association of Air Conditioning Contractors, Arkansas General Contractors Associations, and Young Presidents Organization.
Middleton developed a friendship with Bill Clinton and became an active and successful fundraiser for the future president. Those efforts led to a stint in the Clinton White House, where he served as a senior aide during Clinton’s administration, working as a special assistant to the president and as an assistant to the chief of staff, Mack McLarty.
Middleton’s time in the White House ended badly, as his fundraising efforts for Clinton came under congressional scrutiny from the newly elected Republican majority, with an investigation finding that Middleton abused his contacts to position himself as an international dealmaker. Consequently, his access to the White House was restricted after he left to work in the private sector.
Middleton returned to the family business as well as engaging in other endeavors, including serving as a co-chair with his brother and sister of the 2019 Miracle Ball benefiting Arkansas Children’s Hospital. In January 2019, newly elected Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott Jr. named Middleton to the subcommittee on Economic Development, one of the eight bodies Scott created in an effort to set the agenda for his tenure in office.
Middleton died suddenly on May 7, 2022, at the age of fifty-nine. The death was ruled a suicide, but it quickly became shrouded in controversy when initial reports, later contradicted, said that he had been found hanging from a tree, seemingly having hanged himself; at the same time, it was clear he had been shot, but there was no gun at the scene. Subsequent reports stated that his body was discovered at Heifer Ranch in Perryville (Perry County) on May 7, with a shotgun found not far from the body. Adding to speculation was the fact that the report from the coroner’s office that had been released before the death was officially ruled a suicide contained notes from the coroner stating that Middleton had a history of depression.
While subsequent reports corrected the initial omission about the shotgun, they could not quell the rumors that added Middleton’s death to the conspiracy theories that, almost a quarter century after Clinton left the presidency, continued to swirl around the ex-president and his wife, Hillary. In Middleton’s case, the curiosity was magnified by the fact that he had alleged ties with the disgraced financier and pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, with White House records indicating that on seven occasions it had been Middleton who had signed Epstein in on visits to the White House. There were also reports that Middleton had ridden on Epstein’s infamous “Lolita Express” jet.
All of this, coupled with the way in which his White House tenure had ended, led to something of a feeding frenzy in the aftermath of Middleton’s death, leading his wife and brother to file suit in County Circuit Court to prohibit the sheriff’s office and coroner from disclosing photographs, videos, sketches, or other “illustrative content” from the scene of his death. Arguing that the family had been “harassed by outlandish, hurtful, unsupported, and offensive online articles regarding Mr. Middleton, his death, and his family,” they asked—and the court granted their request—that the records be sealed, asserting that their privacy interest “outweighs the public’s interest, or lack thereof, in disclosure.”
Middleton was survived by his wife, Rhea, and two daughters, Lindsay and Lauren.
