June 23, 1900

John Steelman was born on a cotton farm near Thornton (Calhoun County). Steelman became one of President Harry S. Truman’s best friends and top advisors. He performed valuable government services, sometimes without official title, during the administrations of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Truman, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.
