A New York Times article was published just before the Super Tuesday primaries, alleging improprieties about the so-called Whitewater land deal. Jim McDougal had grown bitter that his former friends, the Clintons, then in a presidential race, did not come to his aid and cooperated with the New York Times to publish the article. McDougal was at various times a political aide, politician, instructor of political science, real estate developer, and banker. He attained national attention due to his involvement in what came to be known as the Whitewater scandal. His second wife, Susan McDougal, was also implicated in the investigation. Jim McDougal died in federal prison in 1998.
