An election was held to decide the proposed recall of segregationist members of the Little Rock School Board who had voted to fire forty-four teachers believed to be sympathetic to integration. The election was decided by a narrow vote in favor of removal of the three segregationist board members and retention of the three moderate members. The opposing positions were supported by workers in the STOP (Stop This Outrageous Purge) effort and by members of the segregationist CROSS (Committee to Retain Our Segregated Schools).
