Howard County native John Lewis Ferguson, who had retired the previous year as director of the Arkansas Historical Commission, died in Little Rock (Pulaski County). He is credited with leading the remarkably successful expansion of the commission’s budget and facilities with the formation of the Arkansas Historical Preservation Program. He is buried in County Line Cemetery near Nashville (Howard County).
