The Walton family opened Midtown Shopping Center in downtown Bentonville (Benton County). Sam Walton had opened Walton’s 5 and 10 Variety Store there in 1951 and had bought the Bank of Bentonville in 1961. In 1969, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., began building a warehouse and general office and offered stock for public sale at $16.50 a share.
