The Crossett Lumber Company executed a warranty deed that made a long-term arrangement with the United States Department of Agriculture Forestry Service for the lumber company to convey to the Forestry Service a 1,650-acre parcel of land that had been cut over before 1920 in exchange for the standing timber on the land and a promise to conduct research there for the next fifty years. The need for a research program had become evident when the Crossett Lumber Company realized that virgin timber was running out, and they were faced with the necessity of either finding new resources or changing their practices.
