The Arkansas legislature approved the proposed Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which granted women the right to vote. Arkansas thus became the twelfth state in the United States to ratify the amendment. The vote came during a special session called by Governor Charles Hillman Brough at the request of a committee of fifty women. The vote in the Senate was 29–2 while the vote in the House was 74–15. In the next election, 40,000 women voted in the party primaries.
