Arkansas’s forty-third governor, Jim Guy Tucker, was convicted for misapplying funds for a $150,000 bank loan. The next day, he announced that he would step down as governor, even as he continued to insist on his innocence. After briefly rescinding his resignation, he left office on July 15, 1996, falling victim to what became known as the Whitewater scandal, which also involved Bill and Hillary Clinton. He reentered the private sector to focus on his business enterprises.
