Joseph Corbin died in Pine Bluff (Jefferson County). Corbin was a journalist and served as Arkansas state superintendent of public instruction during Reconstruction. In addition, he was the founder and president of the first African-American institution of higher education in Arkansas, Branch Normal College (now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff).
