July 17, 1861

Mount Ida (Montgomery County) became actively involved in the Civil War when a group of volunteers calling themselves the Montgomery Hunters, led by John W. Lavender and John H. Simpson, left Mount Ida for Fort Smith (Sebastian County). The company of 128 men became Company F, a part of the Fourth Arkansas Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Southern Army.
