Congress divided the land of the Louisiana Purchase along the thirty-third parallel. As a result, Arkansas’s southern boundary was established at latitude thirty-three degrees north. Orleans, south of the line, later became the state of Louisiana, and the southern part of the District of Louisiana (later known as the Louisiana Territory) became Arkansas.
