Burwell Lee, one of the fathers of Methodism in Arkansas, helped to organize a Temperance Society in Batesville (Independence County). In 1835, Lee organized the Methodist Society at Batesville, which hosted the first session of the Arkansas Conference of the Methodist Church the following year.
