The twenty-eighth governor of Arkansas, John Ellis Martineau, died of influenza. As governor, Martineau reflected the emergence of a new style of political leadership. He continued the progressive positions of his predecessors, helped to launch the Arkansas highway system, and successfully led the relief effort following the Flood of 1927.
