President Dwight Eisenhower signed the proposal, presented by Senator J. William Fulbright along with several other senators and representatives from around the country, to put the motto “In God We Trust” on paper money. The proposal was initiated by Camden (Ouachita County) resident Matt Rothert, who noticed that the motto “In God We Trust” appeared on coins but not on paper money.
