James Paul Clarke, the eighteenth governor of Arkansas and a U.S. senator, was born in Yazoo County, Mississippi; he moved to Arkansas in 1879. Clarke was known as a supporter of the silver monetization crusade and a defender of white supremacy as the key doctrine of the Democratic Party.
