Evander McNair was promoted to brigadier general in the Confederate army. McNair was a prosperous antebellum merchant in Mississippi and Arkansas, a Mexican War veteran, and a Confederate general who ranks among Arkansass most successful and respected Civil War commanders, perhaps most noted for the efficient leadership of his brigade in Dyers Field during the Battle of Chickamauga.
