Located in Independence County along U.S. Highway 167, the town of Pleasant Plains voted to receive official incorporation. Pleasant Plains is one of the oldest Arkansas settlements, dating back to the territorial period. The area was first sparsely populated by families who arrived in covered wagons via the Southwest Trail. Although more families began to arrive before the Civil War, the call to action took many men away from the farms, leaving them unattended. Recovery took several years. At the time of incorporation, Pleasant Plains had two or three stores, a barbershop, a post office, and a blacksmith shop. The town continued to grow well into the twenty-first century, with its churches and businesses along the highway serving as the lifeblood of the community.
