The USS Lexington and a gunboat flotilla entered the White River cut-off as part of an eventual Union attack on Arkansas Post. The USS Lexington was a timberclad city-class gunboat in the U.S. Navy that saw extensive service on the Mississippi River and tributaries within Arkansas during the Civil War.
