While moving his command from St. Charles (Arkansas County) to DeValls Bluff (Prairie County) onboard the gunboat the USS St. Louis, Brigadier General William A. Gorman surprised two companies of Confederate infantry, forcing them to flee. An additional attack on the Confederate rear led to the capture of most of the Rebel troops as well as the town of DeValls Bluff.
