August 4, 1881

William L. Payton and former sheriff James Isom were arrested for the murder of John L. W. Mathews during the brief period of violence known as the Perry County War of 1881. Philosophical differences dating back to the Civil War led to a period of political violence that caused the death of the local newspaper editor and pushed Governor Orza A. Hadley to send in a militia to calm the unrest.
