In 1928, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission built a fish hatchery on the south edge of the town of Lonoke (Lonoke County). At the time, the hatchery was the largest in the world. Today, the Joe Hogan Fish Hatchery, a 267-acre facility, has a total of fifty-six ponds. The largest hatchery owned by the state, it has also been credited with having helped spark the local baitfish industry.
