In 1954, Orval Faubus of Madison County narrowly defeated incumbent governor Francis Cherry in a primary runoff election. Faubus went on to defeat Republican candidate Pratt Remmel by some 81,000 votes in the general election. Faubus is shown here in his official gubernatorial portrait.
