Francis Herron of the Ninth Iowa Volunteer Regiment was one of four men to receive the Congressional Medal of Honor for his conduct in combat as the infantry’s lieutenant colonel during the 1862 Battle of Pea Ridge. Herron had an extended career leading Union troops in Arkansas and participated in other actions, including the Battle of Prairie Grove.
