As paved roads grew in number and more Arkansas citizens began to purchase personal automobiles, full-service gas stations, such as this one operated by Continental Oil in Clarksville (Johnson County), began to appear across the state. The company had been founded in 1875 under the name Continental Oil and Transportation Company. However, as can be seen from the sign hanging from this long-gone building, the name of the company, after several mergers, had been modified by the 1930s to simply Continental Oil Company.
