Arthur Hunnicutt of Gravelly (Yell County) made a successful acting career out of playing a typical humorous, rural character. Born in 1910, Hunnicutt attended Arkansas State Teachers College (now the University of Central Arkansas) but dropped out due to lack of funds. He then headed to New York, where he landed a number of roles on Broadway. He first appeared on film in a series of westerns in the 1940s. Hunnicutt soon became one of the most sought-after character actors in Hollywood and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his work in the 1952 film The Big Sky. He is shown here in a still from the film Born Reckless.
