Winslow (Washington County) was once the highest railroad pass on the St. Louis-San Francisco Railroad line between the Rocky and Appalachian mountains. The elevation helped make the town a popular resort, with many people spending the summers there to enjoy the cooler mountain temperatures. In the twenty-first century, the town, which is located on Highway 71, has become somewhat isolated with the completion of I-540 some seven miles to the west.
