Founded in 1879, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock (Pulaski County) is Arkansas’s premier research hospital. The institution has a long history of serving the public by providing the indigent with healthcare. It was transformed from a charity hospital to a teaching institution in 1965 and began accepting paying patients. The hospital has approximately 9,000 employees, making it one of the state’s largest employers. The campus has gone through many expansions since this circa 1969 photograph.
