Author Charles Portis, shown here to the left of actor John Wayne, sold the movie rights to his novel True Grit to Paramount Pictures and saw the film premiere in Arkansas a year after the novel’s publication in 1968. The 1969 film, which followed the novel’s story line fairly closely, starred veteran actor John Wayne and co-starred Arkansas native Glen Campbell, who also sang the Academy Award-nominated title song. The movie was a financial success and garnered Wayne his only Academy Award for Best Actor.
