Mary Steenburgen is perhaps Arkansas’s most celebrated actress of modern times. Born in Newport (Jackson County), she has appeared on stage, television, and in more than thirty feature films. Her movie career began with the 1978 feature film Goin’ South, starring Jack Nicholson. Two years later, in just her third film, she won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in Melvin and Howard (1980).
