Irish immigrant Richard Montgomery served as a brigadier general in the Continental Army during the American Revolution, leading the army that captured Montreal in 1775. Later that year, he was killed in action during the attack on Quebec, an event that was depicted in a well-known painting by artist John Trumbull. On December 9, 1842, the state legislature named the newest county then to be created in his honor.
