On June 24, 1864, the Union gunboat USS Queen City was captured and sunk on the White River near Clarendon (Monroe County). It was the only such boat captured by land forces in Arkansas during the war. Confederate forces under the command of General Jo Shelby captured the ship, stripped it of useful materials, started a fire on deck, and set it adrift. As the boat drifted away, the powder magazines exploded, quickly sinking the boat.
