On January 10-11, 1863, the Confederate fortification of Fort Hindman, located at Arkansas Post (Arkansas County), came under bombardment by a Union flotilla under the direction of Commander David Porter. The boats depicted in this early 1900s Currier & Ives print are most likely the ironclads Baron DeKalb, Louisville, and Cincinnati, along with the timberclad Lexington and tinclad Black Hawk. These five vessels participated in the assault, which ended in a Union victory.
