Confederate Major General Patrick R. Cleburne of Helena (Phillips County) was considered by many as one of the top combat officers of the Army of Tennessee. An early proponent of the arming of slaves, he was killed at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, on November 29, 1864. After the war his body was returned to Helena for reburial.
