Wilbur Mills of Kensett (White County) was a member of the U.S. Congress for thirty-eight years (19391977), eighteen of which he served as the chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee. In 1972, he pursued a brief run for the presidency. Alcoholism and scandals brought an end to his long career in 1977.
