Texas native Bambi Alworth probably would have attended the University of Mississippi on a football scholarship if not for a rule prohibiting married athletes. Instead, he enrolled at the University of Arkansas (UA) in Fayetteville (Washington County), where, as a running back, he became an Academic All-American in 1961. His professional career began in 1962 with the San Diego Chargers as a flanker. He led the American Football League in receiving three times and was named to the All-AFL Team for seven consecutive years. Alworth was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1978.
