In 1946, when the World War II ammunition-testing facility known as the Southwestern Proving Ground located near Hope (Hempstead County) shut down, many of the military personnel and civilian workers who had been attracted to the area for employment chose to stay. One such person was army major Paul Klipsch, shown here. In the years following the war, he developed and began production of a line of stereo speakers that have become renowned worldwide for their quality.
