In 2002, Arkansas first lady Janet Huckabee, wife of Governor Mike Huckabee, made a bid for the office of secretary of state. Many citizens expressed concern about the possibility of a husband and wife holding two of the state’s constitutional offices. Such concerns were alleviated when, as the Republican nominee, she was defeated in the general election.
