In 2002, Arkansas first lady Janet Huckabee, wife of Governor Mike Huckabee, made a bid for the office of secretary of state. Many citizens expressed concern about the possibility of a husband and wife holding two of the states constitutional offices. Such concerns were alleviated when, as the Republican nominee, she was defeated in the general election. She is shown here delivering a campaign speech at a 2002 northwest Arkansas political rally attended by President George W. Bush.
