Dick Allen, the first African American to wear the uniform of the Arkansas Travelers baseball team, had good cause in 1963 when he asked the ownership of the Philadelphia Phillies not to assign him to the Little Rock (Pulaski County) team. Before his arrival, flyers such as the one shown here were distributed by the Capital Citizens’ Council, a radical group making veiled threats to owner Ray Winder regarding the integration of the team.
