While Arkansas National Guard units were arguably the first and last guard units to enter and leave the areas devastated by 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, many Arkansas soldiers stayed home and assisted the thousands of refugees that fled north to safety. Fort Chaffee in Sebastian County welcomed thousands of these refugees. Arkansas Guard members are shown here unloading food and supplies for the evacuees.
